HistoryDescriptive name given in 1890 by U.S. Bureau of Fisheries (USBF). It was named "Os(trov) Nizkoy" meaning "low island," by Lieutenant Sarichev (1826, map 3), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN). Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 4), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), shows it as two islands with Eskimo names; the southern one is "O(strov) Ugushtu" and the northern one, "O(strov) Nunalyugak."
