HistoryEskimo name reported in 1950 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) as "Mup-so-rt." W. O. Pruitt, University of Alaska, spelled the name "Mafsorak" and gives its meaning as "overhanging." The name is derived from the low hill located just to the south.
