History of Hayden Glacier

Named in 1890 by Russell (1891, p. 108), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), for Ferdinand Vandiveer Hayden, 1829-1887, American geologist and founder of the U.S. Geological Survey of the Territories. Born in Massachusetts, he received his M.D. at Albany Medical College where he became interested in geology. After serving as a surgeon in the Civil War, he taught geology at University of Pennsylvania. He headed the Survey of the Territories from 1872 to 1879. In 1879 he was appointed to the newly created U.S. Geological Survey and was in charge of the Montana Division until 1886.
