January 16, 1975 - Hiking Fatality at Flattop Mountain
After passing avalanche warning signs, Cletus Kraft died while accidently triggering a dry-slab avalanche doing a ski descent down a V shaped chute. 8 hours later Cletus was found deceased, in a sitting position beneath 6-1/2 feet of snow. The gully was north facing and had a pitch of 55 degrees. The avalanche was about 230 feet wide and ran 1/4 mile down the slope, dropping 700 feet in elevation.
