Historythis is a translation of the Russian word "selenie" meaning "village (or settlement)," shown by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 24), and applied to a settlement about one mile NE of the point. This "village" reference suggested to Dall, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS), the name for the point of land in 1880. used by the fishermen.
