HistoryOn September 19, 1778, Captain Cook (1785, v. 2, p. 489), RN, named this "Point Shallow Water." Published in French in 1836 as "Cap Nord du haut-fond," meaning "Northern Cape Shallow Waters" by Captain F. P. Lutke, Imperial Russian Navy (IRN). The Eskimo name was recorded as "Asiatchak" by Captain Lutke and as "Aziachak" by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 2), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN).
