HistoryNamed for Captain Mikhail Dmitrievich Tebenkov, 1831-50, early explorer of the North Pacific, director of the Russian American Company and Governor of Russian America from 1845-50. Shown as "Portage Point" on a manuscript map by L. M. Turner in the 1880's. The name "Michael Point," was proposed in 1938 by U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office and was subsequently approved as "Mikhail Point" by Board on Geographic Names (BGN).
