HistoryNamed by Franklin (1828, p. 145) Royal Navy (RN), on August 3, 1826. The Eskimo name "Imaiknaurak" was reported in 1948 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) to mean "no more water there," derived from the occurrence of the sea encroaching upon and destroying a small freshwater lake.
