Named in 1869 by Commander R. W. Meade, U.S. Navy (USN), for charting purposes for a "Mr. Hicks" (complete name not available), a local pilot and trader of the Hudson Bay Company, who piloted the U.S.S. Saginaw on her first trip in Alaskan waters in 1868.
