History of Cape Peirce

Named in 1869 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) for Banjamin Peirce, then superintendent of the "Coast Survey." Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 4), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), called it "M(ys) Peschera," meaning "cave point." This may be the "Calm Point named by Captain Cook (1785, v. 2, p. 431), RN, "from our having calm weather when off it."
