HistoryNative name published by Lieutenant Sarichev (1826, map 16), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), as "M(ys) Chiniatskiy," or "Cape Chiniat," and by the Russian-American Company as "M(ys) Chiniakskiy," or "Cape Chiniak," in 1849. The U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office in 1869 called this feature "Tuniak Point (Tchineyak);" it was later changed to "Cape Chiniak" by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS).
