HistoryAleut name published by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 25), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), as "Mys Chagakh" and "Mys Chigakh" or "Cape Chagakh" and "Cape Chigakh." These names are probably from the word "cidaq," meaning "young bird," and "cagaq," meaning "trench," according to R. H. Geoghegan. Father Ioann Veniaminov in 1846 translated the Aleut word "chagaq" as "natural hole" or "chasm."
