Typically found on St. Lawrence Island, the Seward Peninsula and northwestern coast when in Alaska. In June 2023, one was spotted near Fairbanks, at the Tanana Lakes Recreation Area, by young birder Hazel Sutton.

They winter among Australia and New Zealand.
