About

Extends SE along the N coast of AK from the Return Islands to Newport Entrance and Tigvariak Island; separated from the Beaufort Sea by the Midway Islands, Cross Island, and McClure Islands.

History

Named for Dr. Vilhjalmar Stefansson (1879-1962), Arctic explorer and leader of many expeditions to North American Arctic coast between 1906 and 1918, including the winter of 1908-9 on the Colville Delta. NW end at 702700N1483300W, SE end at 701300N1471500W.
