About

On the E coast of the Chujchi Sea, extending 10 mi NE from the village of Point Hope to the mouth of the Kukpuk River, Arctic Slope.

History

Discovered by Lieutenant Edward Belcher in September 1827 and named by Captain Beechey (1831, v. 2, p. 549), Royal Navy (RN), who wrote, "This cove, which I have named after his (Lt. Belcher's) relation, Captain Marryat, R.N., is the estuary of a river which has no doubt contributed to throw up the point (Point Hope)." Captain Marryat was a famous sailor and noveliet.
