Indenting the south shore of Frederick Sound, 5 miles northwest of the Stikine River at the foot of Le Conte Glacier, 17 miles southeast of Petersburg, Coast Range.
HistoryNamed in 1887 by Lieutenant Commander CM Thomas, U.S. Navy (USN), for Joseph Leconte, professor of geology at the University of California at that time. The Indian name is "Hutli," reported by John Muir, in 1884, for "the Tlingits' mythical thunder bird, the flapping of whose wings produces the thunder."
