About

On the Beaufort Sea coast between Angun Point, on the NW, and Siku Point, on the SE, 35 mi SE of Barter Island, NW of Demarcation Point, Arctic Plain. 14 miles long.

History

Named Beaufort Bay in 1826 by Sir John Franklin (1828, p. 144) for his friend Captain and later Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort, hydrographer to the British Admiralty. Leffingwell (1919, p. 88) wrote, "Beaufort Bay, which extends from the western end of Icy Reef to Humphreys Point, is locally called a lagoon, so the name of Beaufort Lagoon has been adopted on the writer's map."
