Published in 1943 on U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) Chart 8802; named for Samuel Applegate, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS), who commanded the schooner Nellie Juan during a survey of this area in the 1880's.
