area of Alaska, consisting of all land that drains to the Artic Ocean N of the Brooks Range divide, generally excluding the area S of Cape Lisburne, Arctic Slope & Arctic Plain

The descriptive expression "north slope" (or "northern slope") was comm used interchangeably with Arctic slpe as early as the first decade of this century. Since the 1940's the term has taken on the more concrete aspect of a proper name.
