Nogahabara Sand Dunes, are located in a discontinuous permafrost zone. The dunes are region of vegetated dune 1,235 sq miles in area, of that 16 sq miles are active transverse and barchanoid dunes (Asymmetrical wavy dune ridges consisting of parallel rows) and migrate to the southeast. In the active portion of the dune field dunes can reach over 90ft tall, though the average is around 20ft.
Nogahabara Sand Dunes are home to the Nogahabar tiger beetle (Cicindela limbata nogahabarensis) a subspecies of sandy tiger beetle, found only at the dunes. The Alaska tiny shrew (Sorex yukonicus) also call the dunes home. Both are found almost nowhere else in the state.
