Named in 1885 by Lieutenant H. T. Allen (1887, p. 44,45), USA, for John Bremner, prospector who ascended the Copper River, in 1884, as far as Taral and wintered there. See John River. Lieutenant Allen also gave the Indian name as "Tetahena," which means "flowing river."
