History

Visited and named by Ensign J. L. Purcell, U.S. Navy (USN), in 1884 (Stoney, 1900, p. 12). Lieutenant J. C. Cantwell, U.S. Revenue-Cutter Service (USRCS), in 1884 transcribed its Eskimo name as "Emogarikchoit" with a meaning given as "little sea." This name spelled "E-mug-ge-row-che-uk," by Stoney is applied to a village on the lake.
