About
In Bering Strait, 10 mi SE of Little Diomede Island and 18 mi W of Cape Prince of Wales, at the W end of Seward Peninsula.

History
So named in 1826 by Captain Beechey, Royal Navy (RN), (1831, p. 246) because "it is an excellent guide to the eastern channel, which is the widest and best." Beechey recorded its Eskimo name as "Oo-ghee-ak" on his chart and as "Ooghe-eyak" in his text (p. 637).
