History

Captain Lutke (1836, p. 304-5), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), reports this name as "Ounimak detroit" (strait) probably for convenience, after the island name. Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 26), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), shows "Proliv Unimakskiy". meaning "Unimak Strait." Unimak Pass is one of the principal ship passages through the Aleutian Islands.
