Downy woodpeckers are primarily black and white, and closely resemble a hairy woodpecker. However the downy woodpecker is smaller in overall size and has a shorter bill.
Downy woodpeckers primarily eat insects, but will also eat seeds and berries. They will eat from bird feeders and will eat black sunflower seeds.
Habitat & RangeThey range through much of Alaska south of the Brooks Range and east of the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge.
