Downy Woodpecker in Detail.

Downy woodpeckers are primarily black and white, and closely resemble a hairy woodpecker. However the downy woodpecker is smaller in overall size and has a shorter bill.

Downy woodpeckers primarily eat insects, but will also eat seeds and berries. They will eat from bird feeders and will eat black sunflower seeds.

They range through much of Alaska south of the Brooks Range and east of the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge.
