The bright blue and purple Nootka lupine is native to southcentral and southeastern Alaska, the Aleutian Islands, and British Columbia. It can grow up to 2-3 ft. tall, and grows easily in eroded sites such as roadsides, river banks, and open meadows. As a member of the pea family (Fabaceae), the Nootka lupine can fix nitrogen in the soil, making it possible for other plant species to colonize disturbed sites. The seeds of this plant are slightly toxic and should not be eaten.
