Salal in Detail.

Salal (sah-lal) is a woody shrub that stands up to four feet tall, with oval shaped leaves at the end of its branches. The leaves which grow on the plant year-round, have a waxy sheen look to them, and toothed edges.

The berries which are edible, are round and dark purple/black in color.

Salal is common throughout the forest of Southeast Alaska. It grows well in old growth forest among places carpeted with moss.
