Abies lasiocarpa
Rocky Mountain fir, Abies bifolia,
Subalpine Fir (Abies lasiocarpa) is the smallest species of true firs in the western US. Subalpine firs are short and stiff, branches grow straight out, or slightly upwards as they reach out. In ideal conditions Subalpine fir can grow to heights in excess of 100ft. It's not uncommon for a Subalpine Fir to reach over 250 years old. The bark is silvery grey, and young trees have pitch blisters around the trunk. Needs are stiff and slightly curved.
Subalpine Fir cones and seeds are harvested by birds and pine squirrels.
Subalpine Fir as their name implies often grow just below the alpine line.
