About Boreal Owl

Description



Boreal Owl's are tiny, they stand only 8-9 inches head to tail tip, yet they have a wingspan of up to 2ft. Their bodies are white and brown to reddish brown. Their bellies can be white with vertical brownish bars, while the top of their wings are usually brown with white spots. Other than a swooping triangle from their forehead to beak tip their faces are mostly flat when looking straight on.



Their call is easily distinguished.



Diet & Habitat



Boreal Owls feed on voles, mice, shrews, and other smaller birds. They have also been known to feed on insects.



Boreal Owls are found in various habitats in their range from coastal forest, boreal forest, to alpine slopes. They live local lives, not migrating except if necessary for hunting. They typically live 3-4 years.
