April 29, 1999 - Mountaineering Fatality at University Range
Jim Haber, 41, of Whistler, British Columbia was with two other climbers from British Columbia when they left their camp in the early morning, attempting an unnamed peak. Winds were calm and the temperature was five degrees Fahrenheit. Off rope, they were climbing a slope of between 20 and 30 degrees, with Jim leading about ten yards in front of K.R. and G.A.T. Then a snow slab slid away just beneath him. K.R. and G.A.T. were able to cling to the ridge and stay out of the slow-moving release. The slab, which was about 100 feet wide and three feet deep, gathered speed and carried Jim over the edge and out of sight. Jim suffered fatal injuries from the fall of between 1,500 to 2,000 feet. His partners managed to locate and recover Jim's body which was buried under three feet of snow. Jim had obvious head injuries.
