June 19, 2026 - Paddleboarding Fatality at Turnagain Arm
Joshua Matthew Novakovich, 25, or Anchorage was paddleboarding with his girlfriend when he was swept out to the middle of Turnagain Arm. He was able to wait on a sandbar for a while but due to winds and the current he was unable to get back to shore. He called 911 for assistance, for a while he seemed to think things weren't too serious yet, but he did need help. By the time help was dispatched Joshua was hypothermic and exhausted unable to stay on his board he rolled into the water and disappeared. Around 5 hours from the first 911 called they finally made it to his location, only finding his board. His body was recovered on the 21st.
