May 15, 1954 - Fatality at Karstens Ridge
Elton Thayer died after the team slipped and fell for an estimated 1,000ft. When they came to a stop Elton was swinging from the rope over the edge of an ice outcropping, lifeless. Teammate Morton Wood surmised the stop broke his back and killed him instantly.
