May 24, 1998 - Fatality at Denali
Chris Hooyman, 21, Seattle based mountain guide lost his balance late Saturday morning descending West Buttress at about 17,000ft, slipping over the north slope towards Peters Glacier. "One of the climbers stumbled. He had trouble getting up, he fell again, so Chris unclipped, and that's when the fall occurred."
Fellow guide Brent Okita and volunteer ranger Dr. Colin Grissom climbed to the ridge top with 1,800 feet of rope, in a rescue/recovery attempt as soon as weather allowed. Brent descended 1,100 ft with view of the bottom but was unable to spot anything.
