February 13, 2010 - recreating Fatality at 3 Bowls
William Brasher Schorr, 60, of Eagle died in the snow an estimated 1,500 feet above Hiland Road. He had been skiing with a woman and a dog, the pair were skiing near the top of the ridge in the Three Bowls area. Schorr was skiing down to meet up with the woman who was waiting about 700 feet below -- when he triggered the hard slab avalanche. "He went up to do another run by himself with the dog," said Kip Melling. The avalanche looked to be about 150 feet wide. It was reported by neighbors and by a woman who escaped the snow and made it to the road. The first people on the scene were neighbors who saw the man's hand protruding from the snow, Melling said. It took about 45 minutes to recover William's body. Debris from the avalanche was piled roughly three to four feet high in the area. William wasn't carrying an avalanche beacon or other rescue equipment, Melling said.
