About Barred Owl

Description

Barred owls are good-sized owls reaching up to two feet in length. They are a greyish to reddish-brown with horizontal white bars along their back and more inline barring on the tail. Their bellies are a white-tan with brown vertical barring. They have solid black eyes and stout hook yellow beaks. Their heads lack ear tufts.

Diet & Habitat

Barred owls are only found in Southeast Alaska, as they prefer the larger moist forest often found near water.

Rather than pursuing prey barred owls prefer to find a good spot to sit and wait. In video we shot we waited for over an hour, waiting for the barred out to catch its prey. They prefer voles, squirrels, and young hares, but will also eat bats, mink, weasels, various birds, and even large insects.
