The first 2.5 miles of the trail is suitable for day hikers. ORVs (Off-Road Vehicles) are the principle users of the trail. The conditions of the trail varies with seasonal rains and amount of use. Use caution when crossing Tanada Creek as it can be deep and swift. The first 6 miles are generally across dry dirt. The rest of the trail can be very wet with numerous mud bogs. Travel can be difficult. Generally the trail is in fair condition.
Sockeye Salmon migrate up Tanada Creek to spawn in Tanada Lake. You may cross the creek at the established crossing ONLY. Recreational ORV use is not permitted beyond the Wilderness Boundary.
There are opportunities for base camping, fishing, and hiking around Copper Lake and the headwaters of the Copper River in the Wrangell Mountains.
From the Glenn Highway south of Tok and north of Glennallen take the turn east off the highway to Slana. The trailhead is at Milepost 12.2 Nabesna Road on the south side of the road.
Last we checked it was currently closed to ORV. When traveling in the park ORV permits are required for all recreational users. To obtain a permit, apply in person at the Slana Ranger Station (907) 822-7401 or Park Headquarters (907) 822-7250.
