About Hoary Marmot

Description

Hoary Marmots are the largest species of ground squirrel. They're easily distinguished from other species of life in Alaska. A large marmot in Alaska is typically around 15 pounds, with males growing significantly larger than females. Hoary Marmots have white patches between their eyes unlike Alaska Marmots having solid dark grey faces.

Diet & Habitat

Hoary Marmots are found in the mountains. They prefer rocky slopes above tree line.

Marmots take about a month for gestation, and emerge from there dens nearly weaned close to a month after birth. They usually stay with their family groups for two years before setting out on their own. In their third year they are mature enough to reproduce.
