HistoryNamed for Edward Chester Barnard, 1863-1921, Commissioner for the United States for the defining and marking of the boundary between the United States and Canada and between Alaska and Canada. He entered the U S Geological Survey in 1885; mapped the Fortymile District, Alaska, in 1898 and the Nome District, Alaska, in 1900. From 1903 to 1915 he was Chief Topographer of the International Boundary Commission (IBC) and in 1915 he became Boundary Commissioner for the United States.
