HistoryName reported by W. H. Dall, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS), in 1880, "because of its proximity to Pavlof Volcano." The local name, "Bear Bay, was reported in 1946 by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). See Bear Bay.
