About

Western toads (Bufo boreas) is found primarily in the southeastern part of Alaska, including the Tongass National Forest and the Juneau area. They are also found in some parts of the southwestern and southcentral regions of the state.

Western toads in Alaska typically inhabit moist forested areas, including subalpine and alpine habitats. They can also be found near wetlands, such as ponds, lakes, and streams, where they breed during the spring and early summer.

Alaskan western toads have adapted to the harsh climate of the state, which includes long, cold winters and short, cool summers. They are able to survive the cold temperatures by burrowing into the soil or leaf litter and remaining dormant during the winter months.

Their diet is generally composed of small, terrestrial invertebrates that they can capture and swallow whole, as western toads do not have teeth and must swallow their prey whole. They feed on a variety of insect and invertebrate species, including ants, beetles, spiders, snails, and other small arthropods. They are generalist feeders and will eat whatever prey is available in their environment.
