History

Aleut name derived from Unalga I. and reported by Captain Lutke (1836, p. 283), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), as "Detroit d'Ounalga" or "Ounalga Strait." This feature was also published by Father Veniaminov (1840, v. 1, p. 19) as "P(roliv) Unalginskiy" or "Unalga Strait." It was called "Canal de Camacho" by Martinez about July 22, 1788, in honor of one of his pilots (Wagner, 1937, p. 437).
