History

Named "Ship Island" by Lieutenant Commander R. W. Meade, U.S. Navy (USN), and published in 1869 on Hydrographic Chart 225. The name, "Sail Island," was published by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) in the 1891 Coast Pilot (p. 143).
