History

Named for John Treadwell, 1842-1927, one of the early miners in the Juneau area. He arrived in Juneau in 1881 and mined in the Gold Creek area. Later the same year he organized the Treadwell Gold Mining Co. In 1889 he sold his interests and left Alaska. Treadwell was a company town founded in 1881, incorporated in 1901, and disincorporated in 1912.
