History

Name is of Ahtena Indian origin, reportedly meaning "marmot river" (che-les'shi-tna). The name was discovered in 1898 by Capt W.R. Abercrombie, USA, who spelled it "Chestalena." Lieutenant H.T. Allen, USA, referred to the feature in 1885 as "Liebigstag" for a local Indian chief (Orth, 1967). The latter name still had limited use as late as 1902.
