History

Name reported as "O(strov) Youkolny," meaning "stone coal" by Captain Lutke (1836, p. 271), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN). Shown as "Ukolnoi Island" on 1882 U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) chart. The Aleut name is "Kitagutak," according to Father Veniaminov (1840, v. 1, p. 252).
