History

Descriptive name given in 1849 by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 3), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN). Russian Hydrography Dept. Chart 1455 (edition of 1952) shows it as "Cape Anderson," thus attempting to preserve the name Captain James Cook, RN, gave to St. Lawrence Island 1n 1778. Admiral A. J. von Krusenstern, Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), in his Hdrographic Memoirs, named it "Shishmarev" (Chichmareff), for Captain Lieutenant Glieb Semeonovich, who surveyed St. Lawrence Island in 1821.
