named for Captain Lieutenant Peter Kuzimch Krenitzin, Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), commander of the galliot Saint Catherine, who led a Russian exploring expedition to the Aleutian Island in 1768-69. by Admiral von Krusenstern (1827, atlas map 20), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), as "C(ap) Krenitzyn."
