History

Named on June 8, 1778, by Captain Cook (1785, v. z, p. 405-406), who applied the name to a point 2 mi. north, which is now "Cape Chiniak." He wrote, "The land here forms a point, which was named Cape Greville. It lies in the latitude of 573300 and is distant fifteen leagues from Cape St. Hermogenes, in the direction of South, 170000 West."
