History

Named in 1937 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) for Rear Admiral Raymond Stanton Patton, 1882-1937, who began his service in U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) in 1904. As commanding officer of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) steamer Explorer in 1914, he made surveys in Prince William Sound. In 1915 he was appointed chief of the Coast Pilot Section in the Washington Office, and during World War I served as Lieutenant and Lieutenant Commander in the Navy. He served as a member of the U.S. Geographic Board from December 1926 to June 1934. Rear Admiral Patton was appointed director of the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey in 1929, in which office he served continuously until his death on November 25, 1937.
