History
The descriptive term "El Arrecife," meaning "the reefs," was applied to these islands in 1775-79 by Don Juan de la Bodega y Quadra and Francisco Antonio Maurelle. The Islands were formally named "Arrecife Islands" in 1923 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS).
